Wiley becomes Perplexity's first education partner

Wiley will make its educational collections available inside Perplexity's AI search for educators and students. Wiley is Perplexity's first education partner and no financial terms were disclosed.

HOBOKEN, N.J., May 8, 2025. Wiley announced a partnership with Perplexity to integrate Wiley content into Perplexity's generative AI search for educators and students. Wiley becomes Perplexity's first education partner.1

Terms of the deal

Users at institutions that subscribe to Perplexity Enterprise Pro can access Wiley educational collections their institution has purchased, in areas such as nursing, business and engineering. Wiley employees will also receive Enterprise Pro licenses.1 Pilot users include Texas A&M University and Texas State University, with several UK universities expected to start soon.1 The release does not disclose financial terms.1

Background

Wiley has built an AI licensing business across several partners. It announced a collaboration with Amazon Web Services in May 2025 and a partnership plan with Anthropic in July 2025. In fiscal 2026 it reported $49.1 million of AI license revenue, up from $40 million the year before.2

Perplexity has also been the subject of publisher lawsuits and has signed content programs with news organizations. The Wiley agreement positions the search company in education, where answers depend on trusted textbooks and reference works.

What it means for data sellers

This deal links AI access to existing customers. A buyer gets premium content in a product, and the seller keeps its sales relationship with the institution that pays. Companies with data that their customers already license can look for the same structure: the AI product reaches only entitled users. The cost is that revenue is tied to adoption, not a fixed fee, though the terms here are not public.

How the deal came together

  1. A pilot started with two universities. Texas A&M and Texas State University were pilot users, with several UK universities expected to follow.
  2. Access follows institutional purchase. Users at institutions on Perplexity Enterprise Pro can reach Wiley collections that their institution has purchased.
  3. Wiley staff got licenses too. Wiley employees were given access to Enterprise Pro as part of the arrangement.
  4. Terms stayed private. The release gave no fees, duration or revenue share.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • Tying AI access to what an institution already bought protects existing subscription revenue.
  • Being first in a vertical can be worth more than the contract value, since it sets the template.
  • Seller-side licenses for staff are a common non-cash term.
