AI Data Deal TrackerDeal brief
IOP Publishing makes books and journals available to AI applications through Cashmere
IOP Publishing will license its physical sciences book and journal content for inference use by authorized AI applications through Cashmere. The content is protected from training use and no fees were disclosed.
BRISTOL, England, September 9, 2026. IOP Publishing announced a partnership with Cashmere that will make its book and journal content available to authorized AI applications for inference use.1
Terms of the deal
Cashmere's infrastructure will license IOP Publishing's content to AI applications and monitor how it is used. Cashmere's chief executive says the content is licensed for inference, protected from training use and fully tracked.1 He also says each use is visible and compensated, though the announcement gives no fees, payment amounts or revenue terms.1
Background
IOP Publishing is the publishing arm of the Institute of Physics and publishes physical sciences research. The announcement describes the deal as building on Cashmere's growing network of publisher relationships.1 Princeton University Press signed a similar arrangement in August 2026 and De Gruyter Brill followed in September.23
Unlike the large commercial publishers that have signed training licenses with AI companies, these deals avoid training altogether. The licensed content is meant to be read by an AI product when a user asks a question, with use measured and paid for.
What it means for data sellers
Metered, per-use licensing is an alternative to a flat fee. A seller gets paid as the buyer's product is used, which can grow with adoption but is hard to forecast. If you consider this model, ask how use is counted, how often you are paid, and what audit rights you have. Also check whether the intermediary or the AI platform bears the risk of low usage.
How the deal came together
- Cashmere licenses and tracks use. Cashmere's infrastructure licenses the content to AI applications and monitors how it is used.
- Inference only. Cashmere's chief executive says the content is licensed for inference, protected from training use, and fully tracked.
- Use is compensated. The chief executive says each use is visible and compensated, but no details were given.
- A growing network. The announcement says the deal builds on Cashmere's growing network of publisher relationships.
Takeaways for companies with data
- Learned societies and their publishers are choosing tracked, per-use models.
- Visibility into use is a selling point, but the rate card is not public.
- Smaller publishers use platforms to reach AI buyers they could not approach alone.
