Sage licenses about 400 journals to Causaly for AI drug discovery research

Sage will let London-based Causaly's AI agents read the full text of about 400 Sage journals inside its drug discovery platform. The deal is for retrieval, not model training, and no financial terms were disclosed.

LONDON, July 29, 2026. Causaly and Sage Publishing announced a partnership to bring full-text scientific peer-reviewed literature into Causaly's AI-powered drug discovery research platform.1

Terms of the deal

Causaly's AI agents can read the full text of about 400 Sage journals, selected from Sage's portfolio of more than 1,500. Relevant insights appear within the Causaly platform. The integration is an add-on to existing Causaly subscriptions.1 Sage subscribers can link from Causaly's evidence view to the full article on Sage's website. Customers without a Sage subscription see a snapshot of the article and can purchase it through Sage's platform.1

The deal is a retrieval-augmented generation license, not an AI training license. Financial terms were not disclosed.1

Background

Sage had said in 2024 that it was considering licensing content to AI firms and would share income with authors and societies under its contracts.2 In January 2026 it signed a pilot with Consensus, and in September 2026 it licensed more than 300 titles to OpenEvidence.34 The Causaly agreement came in between.

Causaly, based in London, builds AI tools for pharmaceutical research teams. The addition of Sage content extends the range of full text its agents can use.

What it means for data sellers

The structure is useful for any data owner that also sells directly. The AI product pays or promotes access, and a purchase link keeps the seller's own channel in the loop. A seller should decide which part of the catalog to put forward, and hold back the rest for exclusive or higher-priced arrangements.

How the deal came together

  1. Causaly sought full text. The company's AI agents read scientific literature to support drug discovery research.
  2. Sage selected the journals. About 400 journals were chosen from a portfolio of more than 1,500, including titles in life sciences.
  3. Access is an add-on. The integration is an add-on to existing Causaly subscriptions.
  4. Readers are sent back to Sage. Sage subscribers can link to the full article on Sage's site, and non-subscribers see a snapshot and can buy the article.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • Keeping a purchase path inside the AI product protects direct sales.
  • Selecting a subset of a catalog for a buyer keeps the rest available for other deals.
  • A repeatable template, as with Consensus earlier in 2026, lowers legal cost per deal.
