De Gruyter Brill lets Consensus read the full text of its journals
De Gruyter Brill partnered with AI research search platform Consensus, which will index and analyze the full text of its journals to improve discovery. The publisher states its content is not used to train AI models.
BERLIN, August 6, 2026. De Gruyter Brill announced a partnership with Consensus, an AI-powered academic search platform. Consensus will index and analyze the full text of De Gruyter Brill journal content.1
Terms of the deal
Consensus will use the full text to improve discovery for researchers on its platform, with features that connect users to the original published source. De Gruyter Brill states that its content is not used to train AI models.1 The post gives no financial, contractual or duration terms.1
Background
Consensus signed a pilot with Sage Publishing in January 2026 for full-text indexing, and says it does not train on publisher content.2 De Gruyter Brill's partnership followed in August.
The publisher was formed in 2024 from the merger of De Gruyter and Brill and works mainly in humanities and social sciences. In September 2026 it also agreed to license its English-language catalogue for inference use through Cashmere.3 Its author guidance says authors will receive a share of revenue per title for each agreement it signs with generative AI providers.4
What it means for data sellers
A seller can license the same dataset to several narrow AI products, as long as each use is defined and does not conflict with the others. A short, public statement about what the buyer may not do helps with partners and contributors. Data owners should still keep the right to verify that the stated limits are respected.
How the deal came together
- Consensus gets full-text access. The platform can index and analyze De Gruyter Brill journal content.
- Use is limited to discovery. The content supports search and discovery features that connect users to the original published source.
- Training is ruled out. The publisher says its content is not used to train AI models.
- Terms stayed private. The post did not describe financial, contractual or duration terms.
Takeaways for companies with data
- Publishers can sign several narrow licenses with different AI search tools at once.
- Saying clearly what the data will not be used for is part of the announcement now.
- Discovery traffic back to the publisher's site is the main stated benefit.
