Springer Nature signs subscription agreement with OpenEvidence for peer-reviewed content

Springer Nature agreed to supply peer-reviewed scientific and medical content to the OpenEvidence clinical AI platform under a subscription agreement effective August 5, 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed.

NEW YORK and MIAMI, August 4, 2026. Springer Nature and OpenEvidence announced a subscription agreement that brings Springer Nature's peer-reviewed content into the OpenEvidence platform. The agreement takes effect August 5, 2026.1

Terms of the deal

Physicians using OpenEvidence can retrieve and cite Springer Nature content during patient care. The agreement is part of Springer Nature's ARC3 framework, which covers clear attribution and links to original research, transparency about how content is used, and alignment with its Responsible AI Principles.1 OpenEvidence's founder said the content includes many of the world's most influential medical journals, books and society publications.2

The announcement does not describe fees, pricing, payment structure, duration or renewal.1

Background

OpenEvidence is a clinical decision-support product that answers physicians' questions with cited evidence. It has signed content agreements with NEJM Group in February 2025, the JAMA Network in June 2025 and Wiley in March 2026.3 Springer Nature said similar agreements already exist with those publishers and with specialist societies.1

Springer Nature had been more cautious than some peers about licensing for model training. Its public AI guidance says it licenses content for large language model use only in limited cases. This arrangement is framed around retrieval and citation.

Springer Nature's chief executive said the aim was maximum exposure for scientific research.2

What it means for data sellers

The deal shows that cautious sellers can still take part in the AI market by choosing a retrieval and attribution model. Before approaching buyers, a data owner should write down what uses it will and will not allow, as Springer Nature did with ARC3, so negotiations start from a policy and not from a blank page.

How the deal came together

  1. Springer Nature framed it under its ARC3 policy. The agreement forms part of Springer Nature's ARC3 framework, covering attribution, transparency about use and its responsible AI principles.
  2. Content is retrieved and cited. Physicians using OpenEvidence can retrieve and cite Springer Nature content during patient care.
  3. It is a subscription, not a sale. The release describes a subscription agreement, with no duration or renewal terms given.
  4. Peers had signed already. Springer Nature said similar agreements are in place between OpenEvidence and NEJM Group, Wiley, JAMA Network and several specialist societies.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • A subscription model keeps ownership with the publisher and charges for access.
  • Large publishers set their own AI policy first, then sign deals that fit it.
  • Late entrants into a buyer's roster can still land, but the buyer's list gets crowded.
