Wiley and Amazon Web Services launch AI agent for full-text journal search

Wiley announced a collaboration with AWS to put its scientific content into a life sciences AI agent. The agent searches the full text of journals, starting with Creative Commons articles.

NEW YORK, May 5, 2025. Wiley announced a collaboration with Amazon Web Services to integrate scientific content into life sciences AI agents. The first product is a generative AI agent for scientific literature search that runs on AWS.1

Terms of the deal

The agent searches the full text of Wiley journals, reaching sections such as methods and results, rather than abstracts alone. It is part of an open-source toolkit of healthcare and life sciences agents that AWS assembled. At launch it covers articles published under Creative Commons licenses, such as those in Cancer Medicine.1 Wiley says the work follows principles of human oversight, transparency, attribution, fairness and governance.2

The release does not give financial terms, a contract length or an exclusivity clause.1

Background

The announcement came days before Wiley's partnership with Perplexity and about two months before its plan with Anthropic. Wiley has said it treats AI licensing as a growth business and reported $49.1 million of AI license revenue in fiscal 2026.3

AWS has been adding agent tooling for pharmaceutical and clinical research customers, where full-text literature access is a recurring need. Wiley's release said the agent can return cited insights in minutes for work that would otherwise take hours to days.2

What it means for data sellers

The deal is a small first step that can grow. Using content that is already openly licensed lowers the legal barrier, and the seller still gets visibility inside a large cloud customer base. Data owners can consider a similar staged approach: begin with the part of a dataset that carries the fewest restrictions, prove the use case, then negotiate access to the restricted remainder.

How the deal came together

  1. Wiley built an agent on AWS. The generative AI agent runs on AWS and searches full journal text, including methods and results, not only abstracts.
  2. It joined an AWS toolkit. The agent is part of an open-source toolkit of healthcare and life sciences agents assembled by AWS.
  3. Launch began with open content. At launch the agent covered articles under Creative Commons licenses, such as the journal Cancer Medicine.
  4. Public unveiling followed. It was shown at the AWS Life Sciences Symposium in New York City on May 6, 2025.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • Starting with openly licensed content lets a seller test a product with limited rights risk.
  • Cloud providers pair content with their own infrastructure, so a deal may be as much distribution as payment.
  • No fee was disclosed, so the value may be in product reach.
