Wiley and Anthropic plan partnership to put scholarly journals inside Claude
Wiley announced plans for a strategic partnership with Anthropic, starting with a pilot in which researchers and students can reach Wiley journal content inside Claude. The partnership is subject to a definitive agreement.
HOBOKEN, N.J., July 9, 2025. Wiley announced plans for a strategic partnership with Anthropic. It begins with a pilot that gives researchers and students at participating institutions access to Wiley's scientific journal content directly within Claude.1
Terms of the deal
Wiley is adopting the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard created by Anthropic, to connect its content to AI tools. The two companies also plan to set standards for how AI tools integrate journal content, including author attribution and citations.1 The partnership is subject to a definitive agreement, which had not been signed at announcement. No financial terms, pilot length or institution names were given.1
Josh Jarrett, Wiley's senior vice president of AI Growth, described the aim as setting the standard for how academic publishers integrate trusted scientific content with AI platforms.1
Background
The announcement followed Wiley's May 2025 partnership with Perplexity and its collaboration with Amazon Web Services. Wiley has said AI licensing is a growing part of its business, and reported $49.1 million of AI license revenue for fiscal 2026.2
Unlike a training license, this arrangement is built around access at the moment a user asks a question, with the source cited. That model keeps the publisher's content in a controlled channel.
What it means for data sellers
Not every AI deal transfers data to the buyer for training. A seller can offer retrieval access through a protocol, keep control of the full text and ask for citations. That structure is easier to explain to contributors and customers, though it may bring lower fees than a training license. Sellers should confirm whether an announced partnership is signed before treating it as revenue.
How the deal came together
- Wiley adopted an open protocol. Wiley agreed to use the Model Context Protocol, an open standard created by Anthropic, to connect its content to AI tools.
- A pilot came first. Researchers and students at piloting institutions can access Wiley's scientific journals directly within Claude.
- Attribution is part of the design. The partners said they plan to set standards for author attribution and citations when journal content appears in AI answers.
- A definitive agreement is still needed. The release described plans for a partnership that depends on a signed definitive agreement.
Takeaways for companies with data
- Retrieval access, where the AI reads content at query time, can be licensed separately from training.
- A pilot with a few institutions lets a publisher test attribution and usage reporting before a wider license.
- Announcements can precede signed contracts, so read the wording.
