NEJM Group signs multi-year content agreement with OpenEvidence

OpenEvidence signed a multi-year agreement to use content from the New England Journal of Medicine and sister titles since 1990 to inform answers on its platform. Financial terms were not disclosed.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., February 19, 2025. OpenEvidence and NEJM Group, publisher of the New England Journal of Medicine, signed a multi-year content agreement. OpenEvidence will use NEJM Group content to inform answers on its platform.1

Terms of the deal

The agreement covers all published content and multimedia from 1990 forward across NEJM, NEJM Evidence, NEJM AI, NEJM Catalyst and NEJM Journal Watch.1 It is described only as multi-year, and the announcement does not disclose financial terms.1

Background

OpenEvidence is a medical search and clinical decision-support platform used by physicians. NEJM Group was an early publisher partner. The JAMA Network followed in June 2025 with a multi-year agreement of its own, and Springer Nature and Wiley later announced deals with the same company.2

NEJM Group is the publishing arm of the Massachusetts Medical Society. The agreement is a content license for an AI product that answers questions with sources, not a sale of the journal to a general-purpose model builder. The announcement did not say whether the content may be used to train OpenEvidence's models or only retrieved at question time.

What it means for data sellers

Premium, well-curated archives can sell to specialist AI companies without a headline price. A seller should be clear on whether the grant covers training, retrieval or both, because the announcement here left that open. Specifying the scope in the contract, and the term length, protects the seller when the buyer's product changes or the buyer is acquired.

How the deal came together

  1. OpenEvidence sought trusted journals. The company builds clinical answers from medical literature and signed publishers directly.
  2. NEJM Group opened its archive from 1990. The agreement covers published content and multimedia from NEJM, NEJM Evidence, NEJM AI, NEJM Catalyst and NEJM Journal Watch since 1990.
  3. The term was multi-year. The announcement gave no specific length.
  4. More publishers followed. JAMA Network signed in June 2025 and Wiley and Springer Nature signed in 2026.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • A deep back catalog with a recognized brand is the asset buyers in a vertical will pay to be associated with.
  • A multi-year term gives both sides predictability.
  • The first publisher to sign in a vertical often shapes terms for the rest.
