Wikimedia Foundation names Meta as a paying Wikimedia Enterprise partner

The Wikimedia Foundation announced that Meta is a Wikimedia Enterprise partner, a commercial product giving large reusers high-volume access to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia content. Prices and terms were not published.

SAN FRANCISCO, January 15, 2026 The Wikimedia Foundation announced that Meta is among the companies that have become Wikimedia Enterprise partners, part of a group of new partners disclosed on Wikipedia's 25th anniversary. No financial terms were disclosed.1

Terms of the deal

Wikimedia Enterprise is a commercial product for large-scale reusers and distributors of Wikimedia content. The foundation's announcement named Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI and Perplexity as the new partners, alongside existing partners including Google, Ecosia, Nomic, Pleias, ProRata and Reef Media.1 The announcement did not specify contract length, conditions or prices. Wikimedia content is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, and the page links to a separate pricing page without listing figures.1

Background

Large technology companies had long used Wikipedia text for search, assistants and model training, largely through free access and scraping. Wikimedia Enterprise was built to give heavy users a dependable, structured feed in exchange for payment, while the public content remains free. Google was the first publicly known paying customer of the service in 2022. The January 2026 announcement extended the roster to major AI developers.

What it means for data sellers

The Wikimedia approach separates the data from the service. Even when content is openly licensed, a seller can charge for freshness, uptime, formats and support. A company that cannot restrict reuse of its data can still build a paid offering around reliable access. It should publish partner names where the buyer agrees, since public customers support later sales.

How the deal came together

  1. Wikimedia built a commercial tier. Wikimedia Enterprise sells structured, high-volume access to Wikimedia content to large reusers and distributors.
  2. Partners signed over time. The foundation said several relationships were finalized before the public announcement.
  3. Disclosure on Wikipedia's 25th anniversary. On January 15, 2026, Wikimedia named Meta alongside four other new partners.
  4. Free content, paid service. The content stays under CC BY-SA 4.0, and the fee is for the service level and access.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • Open content can still be monetized through reliability, structure and scale of access rather than exclusivity.
  • Selling a service tier lets a nonprofit or platform charge large users without closing the data.
  • Named, public partners create social proof for other buyers.
