March 23, 2026 Arc XP, the content platform built by The Washington Post, announced an integration with TollBit that lets its publishers monitor, block or redirect AI bots to a Bot Paywall with set prices.1
Terms of the deal
Arc XP clients, which include The Irish Times, Sky News and Graham Media Group, can choose to charge AI bots through TollBit.1 Pricing, revenue splits and payment amounts were not disclosed.1
Background
An earlier Media Copilot piece says TollBit lets publishers set prices per 1,000 pages scraped, with licenses for summarization and for full display, neither permitting model training, and that the paying AI-company marketplace had not materialized at scale.2
What it means for data sellers
Publishers on a content platform can add pay-per-crawl without building it themselves. Revenue depends on AI buyers actually paying, which that earlier piece says had not yet happened at scale.
How the deal came together
- Announcement. The Media Copilot reported the partnership on March 23, 2026, saying it was announced on a Monday.
- Monitor and classify. Arc XP publishers can monitor AI bot traffic through TollBit's analytics, classify bots in real time and block them.
- Bot Paywall. Publishers can instead redirect bots to a TollBit Bot Paywall with access rules and pricing, and AI companies can pay programmatically for real-time access.
- Roles. Arc XP handles edge integration and policy controls, and TollBit manages payments. Participation in monetization is optional.
Takeaways for companies with data
- Platforms that host many publishers can turn on bot payments for all of them at once.
- The access rules and prices are set per publisher, and the article gives none.
- Another source says paying AI buyers have not yet appeared at scale on TollBit's marketplace.
