Sony Music Entertainment signs an AI licensing deal with KLAY for its Large Music Model

Sony Music Entertainment and its publishing arm signed a separate AI licensing agreement with KLAY Vision. KLAY says its Large Music Model is trained entirely on licensed music.

LOS ANGELES, November 20, 2025 KLAY Vision, a Los Angeles music technology company, announced on November 20, 2025 that it signed an AI licensing agreement with Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Publishing. Financial terms were not disclosed.1

Terms of the deal

KLAY says the agreements set terms for using AI to enhance fan music experiences while respecting rightsholders' rights. The company is building a platform with immersive, interactive listening tools powered by its Large Music Model, which it says was trained entirely on licensed music.1 Sony Music's Dennis Kooker said proper licenses are needed from rightsholders and called the deal a beginning.1 Fees and royalty terms were not published.

The public record on this agreement is limited to the announcement and the press coverage cited below. The price is listed here as: Undisclosed. The status shown, Signed, reflects the most recent reporting available on October 22, 2026, and any later amendments are not captured.

Background

KLAY's leadership includes Ary Attie as founder and chief executive, former Sony Music executive Thomas Hesse as co-founder, and Björn Winckler, a former Google DeepMind music lead, as chief AI officer. KLAY said it plans to extend the framework to independent labels, artists, publishers and songwriters.1 In June 2026 the NMPA announced a further agreement in principle with KLAY for publishers.

What it means for data sellers

Sellers can note that a buyer with a detailed licensing framework signed before launch can shorten negotiations later. Ask whether your terms are meant to be a precedent for others and whether most favored nation protections apply.

How the deal came together

  1. Framework talks. KLAY worked with industry partners for more than a year on a licensing framework.
  2. Separate agreements. Each major signed its own deal that included its publishing arm.
  3. Announcement. KLAY announced the agreements on November 20, 2025.
  4. Expansion. KLAY plans to extend the framework to independents.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • A startup can win all three majors by building the licensing framework before launch.
  • Each rightsholder negotiates separately, so terms may differ.
  • Publishing and recordings are licensed together in this structure.
