News/Media Alliance announces AI licensing framework with ProRata
Members of the News/Media Alliance can opt into a content license with ProRata for its Gist.AI product. ProRata says it will pay 50% of Gist.AI revenue to publishers, split by attribution.
ARLINGTON, Va., March 26, 2025 - The News/Media Alliance announced an AI licensing framework agreement with ProRata AI. Alliance members can opt into a content license with ProRata for use with its Gist.AI product, and ProRata will pay 50% of all Gist.AI revenue to publishers.1
Terms of the deal
According to the Alliance, ProRata's attribution technology identifies when publisher content is used in generative AI answers, attributes the information to the publisher and compensates it for the use of its content. Some Alliance members, including McClatchy, The Atlantic and MIT Technology Review, were already content partners with ProRata at the time of the announcement.1
Alliance president and chief executive Danielle Coffey said the agreement should serve as a model for how the AI industry can grow sustainably, and that AI companies can and must cooperate with publishers rather than exploit their work without pay.1 The framework is opt-in, so no member is bound unless it chooses to join. The announcement did not publish a dollar figure.
Background
ProRata operates Gist.ai, an AI search engine that answers questions using only licensed content from its publisher partners. Digiday reported in June 2025 that the company had grown to 500 publisher partners, and that ProRata's revenue comes entirely from advertising, with a plan to add subscriptions.2 A separate Alliance deal in March 2026 gave members a way to license content to the AI startup Bria for enterprise use.3
What it means for data sellers
The Alliance framework shows a path for sellers too small to negotiate alone. A trade body can set the template, and each member opts in. This reduces the cost of negotiating and lowers the risk that a small seller is offered worse terms than a large one.
Sellers should still read what they would be opting into. Payment based on revenue share depends entirely on the buyer's product succeeding, and definitions of revenue and attribution decide the amounts.
