Getty Images and Perplexity sign a multi-year deal to display licensed images in AI search
Getty Images signed a multi-year partnership letting Perplexity display Getty's licensed visuals in its AI search and discovery products. Image credits and source links will be shown.
SEATTLE, October 31, 2025 Getty Images and AI search company Perplexity announced a multi-year partnership on October 31, 2025 to display Getty's licensed visuals across Perplexity's search and discovery products. Financial terms were not disclosed.1
Terms of the deal
Getty supplies visuals through an API integration that gives Perplexity direct access to its image library, and Perplexity plans to show image credits and source links.1 The reporting does not state fees, revenue share or the exact duration.
The public record on this agreement is limited to the announcement and the press coverage cited below. The price is listed here as: Undisclosed. The status shown, Announced, reflects the most recent reporting available on October 22, 2026, and any later amendments are not captured.
Background
Getty had sued Stability AI for alleged unauthorized use of its images in AI training. Perplexity has faced copyright lawsuits from publishers including Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun and has launched a revenue-sharing model with outlets such as TIME and Der Spiegel. Getty shares rose about 5 percent when the news broke.1
What it means for data sellers
Not every AI license is about training. Sellers can license content for display in AI answers, with attribution, and keep control over training rights. Stanford's Mark Lemley noted that such deals could complicate AI companies' fair-use arguments, but that licensing cannot scale to the volume used in training.1
A seller comparing this deal with its own situation should ask what the buyer actually receives: raw data, a license to train, a license to display, or a right to build a product. Each is priced differently, and the answer should be written into the agreement rather than inferred from a press release.
How the deal came together
- Earlier tension. Getty had sued Stability AI over alleged unlicensed training use.
- Display license. Getty and Perplexity agreed on a license for showing images, not training.
- Announcement. The deal was announced on October 31, 2025.
- API access. Getty supplies visuals through an API integration.
Takeaways for companies with data
- A display or retrieval license is a different product from a training license.
- Attribution and links back to the source can be part of the price.
- Deals with AI search tools may start before disputes with other AI firms are resolved.
