Getty Images and Nvidia launch a generative AI service trained on Getty's licensed library

Nvidia and Getty Images announced upgraded generative AI services built on Nvidia's Edify architecture and trained on Getty's licensed content. Contributors are paid a share of profits.

SEATTLE, August 21, 2024 Nvidia and Getty Images announced enhanced generative AI services for Getty and iStock, built on Nvidia's Edify architecture and trained on Getty's licensed content.1

Terms of the deal

Getty used Nvidia AI Foundry to train an Edify image model that powers Generative AI by Getty Images for enterprises and Generative AI by iStock for smaller businesses. The model was trained on licensed content with famous faces and products excluded, and Getty pays contributors a share of profits.1 Pricing and payment terms between Nvidia and Getty were not disclosed.

The public record on this agreement is limited to the announcement and the press coverage cited below. The price is listed here as: Undisclosed. The status shown, Announced, reflects the most recent reporting available on October 22, 2026, and any later amendments are not captured.

Background

Nvidia and Getty first announced the partnership in March 2023. Edify can produce four 1k images in about six seconds, and a generative upscaler can take them to 4k, according to the announcement coverage.1 Getty has also licensed content to Runway for a video model, which shows the same library supporting several AI products.2

What it means for data sellers

This example shows a seller using its own licensed archive to run an AI product, with a technology supplier providing tools. Sellers considering the same route should plan contributor compensation and exclusions up front.

A seller comparing this deal with its own situation should ask what the buyer actually receives: raw data, a license to train, a license to display, or a right to build a product. Each is priced differently, and the answer should be written into the agreement rather than inferred from a press release.

How the deal came together

  1. 2023 partnership. Nvidia and Getty announced a collaboration in March 2023 to build generative models.
  2. Model training. Getty used Nvidia AI Foundry to train an Edify image model on its licensed content.
  3. Upgrade. The companies announced the enhanced service in August 2024.
  4. Products. The model powers Generative AI by Getty Images and Generative AI by iStock.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • Contributor revenue sharing can be built into licensed-data products.
  • Excluding famous faces and products is a common safeguard in licensed training sets.
  • Pricing between the data owner and the technology partner is usually private.
