Copyright Clearance Center launches collective license for internal AI use of copyrighted content

Copyright Clearance Center added a collective license for internal use of copyrighted materials in AI systems to its Annual Copyright License service, available from July 1, 2024. It covers internal use only and returns royalties to rightsholders. No pricing was published.

NEW YORK, July 16, 2024 Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) announced a collective license for the internal use of copyrighted materials in AI systems, Publishers Weekly reported. The service became available July 1, 2024 and is an addition to CCC's existing Annual Copyright Licenses service.1

Terms of the deal

The license gives companies a streamlined way to obtain a consistent set of rights across multiple rightsholders, with royalties returned to those rightsholders.1 It covers internal use only, not public use, with example use cases that include article summarization, literature review and market surveillance.1

The article does not name participating rightsholders and does not give pricing.1 CCC president and chief executive Tracey Armstrong said it is possible to be pro-AI and pro-copyright.1

What it means for data sellers

Collective licensing is a route for publishers and authors who lack the scale to sign direct deals with AI developers. The 2024 license is limited to internal use, so it is not a license to train public models. Sellers should check what use each collective license actually permits.

This entry is a news summary. SellYourAIData was not involved in the deal.

How the deal came together

  1. CCC adds an AI license. CCC launched a collective licensing solution for the internal use of copyrighted materials in AI systems, available from July 1, 2024.
  2. Rights come bundled. The license gives companies a streamlined way to obtain a consistent set of rights across multiple rightsholders.
  3. Internal use only. It covers internal use, not public use. Example uses include article summarization, literature review and market surveillance.
  4. Royalties flow back. Royalties are returned to the participating rightsholders.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • A collective license lets many small rightsholders reach AI users through one intermediary instead of negotiating one by one.
  • Limiting the license to internal use keeps outputs private and may be easier for rightsholders to accept than training or public-facing uses.
  • No price was published, so sellers cannot benchmark what a collective AI license pays.
