Vox Media licenses content to OpenAI in a strategic partnership

OpenAI will incorporate content from Vox Media's brands into ChatGPT with attribution and links, and Vox will use OpenAI technology in its ad and audience products. Financial terms were not disclosed.

NEW YORK, May 29, 2024 - OpenAI announced a content partnership with Vox Media, which will bring content from Vox and its brands into ChatGPT and other OpenAI products. OpenAI will also work with Vox on generative AI products for audiences and advertisers. Financial terms were not disclosed.1

Terms of the deal

Voicebot.ai reported that ChatGPT and other OpenAI products will incorporate information from Vox's website and from its portfolio of publications, such as The Verge, Eater, New York Magazine, The Cut, Vulture and SB Nation. Answers drawing on those sources will include attribution and links back to the original content.1

Vox Media will collaborate with OpenAI on its own generative AI consumer and advertising products. The company said it wants to upgrade engagement tools such as The Strategist Gift Scout, which uses generative AI to match shoppers with gifts, and to support its Forte platform, which provides targeted advertising. Vox chief executive Jim Bankoff said the agreement aligns with goals of innovating for audiences while protecting and growing the value of Vox's intellectual property.1

Background

The Vox announcement came the same day as OpenAI's deal with The Atlantic, and weeks after News Corp, Dotdash Meredith and the Financial Times.12 Bloomberg and others noted that the deals came amid pushback from authors and publishers who said OpenAI had scraped their work to build its tools. Vox Media later joined the ProRata licensing program in June 2025.3

What it means for data sellers

Vox's deal shows an agreement can include operational benefits for the seller. By taking OpenAI models into its own ad platform, Vox gained capability it would otherwise have paid for or built.

Sellers should treat such benefits as part of the price and write them down. They should also separate rights for consumer display from rights that touch commercial products, such as ad targeting, because the value to the buyer and the risk to the seller differ.
