Bennett, Coleman & Co (Times of India, Economic Times) announces strategic partnership with OpenAI
ChatGPT will surface summaries and excerpts from participating BCCL publications, including The Times of India and The Economic Times, with attribution and links. Financial terms were not disclosed.
MUMBAI, September 7, 2026 - Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd (BCCL), publisher of The Times of India and The Economic Times, and OpenAI announced a strategic partnership under which ChatGPT will surface summaries and excerpts from participating BCCL publications with attribution and links. No financial terms were disclosed.1
Terms of the deal
According to the announcement published by MediaNews4U, when ChatGPT surfaces summaries or excerpts from participating BCCL publications, responses will name the publication and link to the original article. Covered content includes The Times of India, The Economic Times and other BCCL publications, including live reporting and related content, in English and Indian languages.1
The companies also said they will explore OpenAI technology for archive discovery, research, data analysis, translation, reader services and business operations, and described these as potential areas, not commitments. Any newsroom use remains subject to each publication's editorial standards, policies and human oversight, and BCCL's editorial control is stated to be unchanged. BCCL's chief operating officer, Mohit Jain, and OpenAI's media partnerships vice president, Varun Shetty, were named as spokespeople.1
Background
The BCCL announcement is part of OpenAI's widening publisher program, which reached Brazil in May 2026 with Grupo Folha and Grupo UOL.2 The Times of India was also among the publishers in Google's AI pilot partnerships program announced in December 2025.3
What it means for data sellers
The BCCL deal shows a global buyer entering a large non-US market with a licensing relationship. For sellers in markets where AI companies are still building coverage, the opening position may be stronger than in markets that have been licensed for years.
Sellers should note how the release separates the licensed part, attributed display, from the aspirational part, joint exploration. Only the first is a commitment. A seller should keep potential uses out of the license until they are priced and agreed.
