Regeneron and Illumina invest in Truveta Genome Project, gaining sequencing rights and access to EHR data

Truveta launched its Genome Project with $320 million in equity from 17 health systems, Regeneron and Illumina. The Regeneron Genetics Center will sequence up to 10 million exomes and receive access to de-identified EHR data from consented participants.

SEATTLE, January 13, 2025 Truveta announced the Truveta Genome Project, backed by $320 million from 17 health systems, Regeneron and Illumina, to build what it calls the largest and most diverse database of genotypic and phenotypic information, pharmaphorum reported.1

Terms of the deal

Regeneron contributed almost $120 million and Illumina $20 million to Truveta's Series C round, alongside the health systems.1 The Regeneron Genetics Center will sequence up to 10 million exomes from leftover biospecimens from routine lab tests. The center has exclusive rights to perform all research-related sequencing on samples collected under the collaboration and gets access to de-identified electronic health record data from consented participants.1

Truveta and its partners plan to use the data for drug discovery, clinical trial improvement and AI model training.1

Background

Truveta's platform draws on electronic medical record data from more than 120 million people in the U.S., updated daily.1 The project adds genetic data from consented volunteers to that record base.

What it means for data sellers

Health systems contributed data and capital together and became owners of the data venture, rather than only licensors. Sellers with patient or customer data may be able to negotiate equity or governance rights alongside payment. Consent and de-identification are central: the project depends on volunteers who agree to participate.

How the deal came together

  1. A $320M raise. Seventeen health systems, Regeneron and Illumina invested $320 million in Truveta.
  2. Sequencing partnership. The Regeneron Genetics Center will sequence up to 10 million exomes from leftover biospecimens.
  3. Data rights. The center has exclusive rights to research sequencing on the samples and access to de-identified EHR data from consented participants.
  4. Intended uses. The partners plan to use the data for drug discovery, clinical trials and AI model training.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • Data access can be paid for through equity and sequencing partnerships, not only licensing fees.
  • Health systems that contribute data can also share in the venture.
  • Exclusivity on a specific activity (here, sequencing) is a negotiable term.
