NEW YORK, May 12, 2026 Thomson Reuters connected its CoCounsel Legal system to Anthropic's Claude on May 12, 2026, as Anthropic expanded Claude's tools for lawyers, LawSites reported.1
Terms of the deal
The connector brings citation-grounded legal work to Claude. Thomson Reuters says CoCounsel Legal draws on 1.9 billion Westlaw and Practical Law documents, 1.4 billion KeyCite validity signals and a citation ledger that traces sources.1 The next-generation CoCounsel Legal, built on the Claude Agent SDK, was in beta, with general availability planned for summer 2026.1
The article does not disclose pricing or subscription terms for Thomson Reuters.1
Background
The same day, Free Law Project made CourtListener, with court decisions, PACER data, citation networks and oral argument audio, available as an MCP connector. Basic access is free, and elevated access requires a membership or commercial arrangement.1 Thomson Reuters has said it uses models from several AI providers in CoCounsel, and has not been reported to license its Westlaw content for model training in the sources checked here.
What it means for data sellers
The model is licensed access to a premium, curated corpus inside another company's AI product. The seller remains the content and subscription owner. Rights language matters: sellers in this position should be clear about whether partners may retrieve, display or train on their content.
