Tempus to receive $200M in data licensing and model fees under AstraZeneca and Pathos oncology model deal
Tempus, AstraZeneca and Pathos AI agreed to build a multimodal oncology foundation model trained on Tempus's de-identified cancer data. Tempus will receive $200 million in data licensing and model development fees.
CHICAGO, April 23, 2025 Tempus AI, AstraZeneca and Pathos AI announced an agreement to build a large-scale multimodal model for oncology drug discovery, with Tempus receiving $200 million in data licensing and model development fees, Pharmaceutical Technology reported.1
Terms of the deal
Tempus will contribute its de-identified oncology data library to train the model, and all three parties will share the completed model.1 The agreement is multi-year. Tempus will receive $200 million in data licensing and model development fees.1 Tempus shares rose 14.6% on April 23 following the announcement.1
Background
AstraZeneca and Tempus first partnered in 2021 on an AI-driven oncology research alliance and expanded it in 2023 to deploy Tempus Next for clinical decision support in non-small cell lung cancer.1 The model aims to surface biological and clinical insights, identify new drug targets and support new cancer therapies.
What it means for data sellers
A large, well-structured clinical dataset can anchor a nine-figure agreement when the buyer needs it to train a specialized model. Sellers should note that the structure combined cash with model access, and that it followed a long working relationship. Data that has been de-identified, linked and kept current is what turns a library into a licensable asset.
How the deal came together
- Three-way agreement. Tempus, AstraZeneca and Pathos AI announced a joint effort to build a large multimodal model for oncology drug discovery.
- Tempus supplies the data. Tempus will contribute its de-identified oncology data library to train the model.
- Fees to Tempus. Tempus will receive $200 million in data licensing and model development fees.
- Shared model. All three parties will share the completed model.
Takeaways for companies with data
- De-identified clinical data can be licensed to train a model that the data owner also gets to use.
- A deal can pair fees with model access, so the seller benefits from the output.
- The relationship had been built over years, starting with a 2021 alliance.
