Schibsted Media partners with OpenAI to bring Nordic journalism into ChatGPT

OpenAI can integrate real-time articles from Schibsted brands such as VG, Aftenposten, Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet into ChatGPT with attribution. Schibsted gets access to OpenAI's insights and new technology. Financial terms were not disclosed.

OSLO, February 10, 2025 - Schibsted Media and OpenAI announced a strategic partnership to incorporate Schibsted Media's fact-based journalism into OpenAI's services. Schibsted Media will also get access to OpenAI's insights and its new technology. Financial terms were not disclosed.1

Terms of the deal

The partnership lets OpenAI integrate real-time news articles from a selection of Schibsted Media's brands, such as VG, Aftenposten, Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet, into its products, including ChatGPT. The articles will be used to deliver up-to-date news summaries with clear attribution to the Schibsted brands, allowing users to verify the information.1

Schibsted Media chief executive Siv Juvik Tveitnes said the partnership aligns with the company's strategy to integrate AI in ways that support and strengthen journalism. Varun Shetty, OpenAI's head of media partnerships, said it furthers the goal of supporting quality journalism and enhancing the ChatGPT experience with timely news content.1 The announcement did not state a price or term length, and it did not refer to training.

Background

Schibsted Media is a Nordic media group. Its deal is one of a series of publisher partnerships OpenAI announced in early 2025, alongside Axios in January and the Guardian in February, according to Digiday's 2025 timeline.2 Digiday dated the Schibsted announcement February 12, while Schibsted's own page is dated February 10.12

What it means for data sellers

The Schibsted deal shows how a regional publisher can license in its own language market to a global buyer. Local-language news is less likely to be well covered by a model's general training data, which gives the seller a point of value.

Sellers should also note the scope language: a selection of brands, real-time articles, summaries with attribution. Defining content and use narrowly makes it easier to compare offers from different buyers and to license other rights elsewhere.
