Meta signs multi-year deal with Reuters for news in Meta AI

Meta AI began answering news and current-events questions with summaries and links to Reuters reporting, under a multi-year partnership. Neither company disclosed financial terms or whether the content trains Llama.

MENLO PARK, Calif., October 25, 2024 - Meta announced a multi-year partnership with Reuters that lets its AI chatbot, Meta AI, cite and link to Reuters reporting when answering news-related questions. Neither company disclosed financial terms, nor whether Reuters content will be used to train Meta's Llama models.1

Terms of the deal

Maginative reported that, starting October 25, users would see Reuters-sourced responses when asking Meta AI about current events across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. Meta AI answers news queries with summaries and direct links to Reuters coverage.1

The report described the deal as multi-year and as Meta's first major news partnership since ending its earlier arrangements with publishers such as The Wall Street Journal for its discontinued Facebook News tab. Reuters has been a fact-checking partner of Meta since 2020, so the AI deal expands an existing relationship.1

Background

Meta had moved away from paying publishers for news on its platforms, and the Reuters agreement suggested that avoiding news entirely was not feasible as AI became central to its products.1 In December 2025 Meta announced AI data agreements with further publishers including USA Today, People Inc, CNN, Fox News and Le Monde, and in March 2026 it announced deals with Le Figaro, Prisa and Suddeutsche Zeitung.2

What it means for data sellers

The Reuters deal is a reminder to settle two questions in writing. First, is the buyer using the data live, to answer questions, or to train a model, or both? Reports on this deal said it was unclear. Second, how will the seller be credited and linked?

A seller that already has a business relationship with a buyer, as Reuters did through fact-checking, may have an easier path to a data agreement. That relationship does not replace a written scope, and sellers should still document permitted uses.

This entry is a news summary. SellYourAIData was not involved in the deal.

How the deal came together

  1. Meta announced the partnership. On October 25, 2024 Meta said Meta AI would use Reuters content for news-related questions.
  2. Rollout was immediate. Reuters-sourced responses started appearing the same day for US users across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.
  3. Responses link back. Meta AI answers include summaries and direct links to Reuters coverage.
  4. Terms stayed private. Financial terms and any training use were not disclosed.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • A prior working relationship, here fact-checking since 2020, helped open the deal.
  • Whether content may be used for training was left unstated, so sellers should specify it.
  • This was Meta's first major news partnership after it ended its older publisher arrangements.
