Prisa Media signs content partnership with OpenAI

OpenAI partnered with Spanish media group Prisa Media, whose titles include El Pais and Cinco Dias, and may use the content to train its models. Financial terms were not disclosed.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 13, 2024 - OpenAI announced a partnership with Spanish media conglomerate Prisa Media on the same day as a deal with Le Monde. OpenAI said it will be able to use content from Prisa titles to train its AI models. Financial terms were not disclosed.1

Terms of the deal

Reuters reported that OpenAI will use content from Prisa Media publications including El Pais, Cinco Dias and El HuffPost to train the models that power its AI.1 OpenAI described the aim as enabling ChatGPT users around the world to connect with the news in new ways. Prisa Media chief executive Carlos Nunez called the alliance a step toward a future of news where technology and human expertise combine to serve readers.1

The reporting did not state a price, a term length or whether the deal is exclusive. Of OpenAI's publisher deals up to that point, the company's practice had been to keep the money private. TechCrunch noted in April 2024 that financial terms of the Financial Times deal were likewise not public.2

Background

Prisa Media is the media arm of the Spanish group Prisa and is best known for El Pais, one of the Spanish language's leading newspapers. The OpenAI agreement was one of the first deals in a Spanish-speaking market, following the Associated Press in July 2023 and Axel Springer in December 2023.2 Prisa later joined Meta's list of AI content partners, announced in March 2026.

What it means for data sellers

For a seller, the Prisa deal is a reminder that language and regional coverage carry commercial weight. A model developer that has a thin supply of high-quality Spanish text may place a higher value on it than a seller expects.

The deal also shows that one asset can be licensed more than once. Prisa signed with OpenAI first and with a second AI company later, which suggests that non-exclusive terms preserve the seller's ability to find additional buyers.

This entry is a news summary. SellYourAIData was not involved in the deal.
