Guardian Media Group announces strategic partnership with OpenAI

Guardian reporting and archive journalism will be available in ChatGPT as a news source, with attributed short summaries and article extracts. The Guardian will roll out ChatGPT Enterprise. Financial terms were not disclosed.

LONDON, February 14, 2025 - Guardian Media Group announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI that will bring the Guardian's journalism to ChatGPT's global users. Under the partnership, Guardian reporting and archive journalism will be available as a news source within ChatGPT, alongside attributed short summaries and article extracts. Financial terms were not disclosed.1

Terms of the deal

The Guardian's press office said the Guardian will also roll out ChatGPT Enterprise to develop new products, features and tools. Keith Underwood, the group's chief financial and operating officer, said the partnership reflects the intellectual property rights and value associated with its award-winning journalism, and expands its reach and impact to new audiences and innovative platform services.1

The announcement came a year after the Guardian published its approach to generative AI, which focuses on human oversight and benefit to readers, its business and its mission. The group said it would continue to explore agreements with both existing and emerging businesses to ensure fair compensation and attribution for its journalism.1 The release did not mention model training.

Background

A 2025 Digiday analysis noted that the Guardian's wording, like that of The Washington Post's later deal, centred on displaying content in answers and did not refer to training data, in contrast with earlier OpenAI deals such as Axel Springer's and Time's. A Guardian spokesperson declined to comment on the terms.2 The Guardian was later named among the publishers in Google's AI pilot partnerships program.3

What it means for data sellers

The Guardian deal shows the move toward narrower rights. A seller that agrees to attributed summaries and extracts, and not training, retains the option to license training separately, to a different buyer or at a later time.

Sellers should read their own language for what is and is not granted. The Guardian publicly tied the deal to intellectual property value and fair pay, which sets a clear position before the next negotiation.
