Future plc partners with OpenAI to bring its 200 media brands to ChatGPT
OpenAI will give ChatGPT users access to content from Future's more than 200 media brands with attribution and links. Future already used OpenAI tools internally. Financial terms were not disclosed.
LONDON, December 4, 2024 - Future plc and OpenAI announced a strategic partnership to bring content from Future's more than 200 media brands to OpenAI's users. ChatGPT users will be able to access the content with attribution and links to the full original articles. Financial terms were not disclosed.1
Terms of the deal
Game Developer reported that Future will grant OpenAI access to content from its brands, which include Edge, GamesRadar, PC Gamer and Retro Gamer. OpenAI described the move as a strategic partnership that brings Future's journalism to new audiences while enhancing the ChatGPT experience, with attribution and links to the originals for transparency.1
Future had previously worked with OpenAI to deploy chatbots on certain of its websites that help readers engage more deeply with content, and it uses OpenAI tools to boost productivity across sales, marketing and editorial work. Future chief executive Jon Steinberg said the partnership would help the company build global communities and expand its engagement.1 The report gave no price or term length.
Background
Future is a UK-listed publisher of specialist titles, from technology and games to music and lifestyle. In June 2025 it joined a group of publishers that license content to ProRata, whose Gist.ai answer engine pays half its revenue to publishers, Digiday reported.2
What it means for data sellers
Future's agreement shows that niche, high-intent content has a market with AI buyers. A general news archive covers broad topics, while a specialist library can cover product reviews, game coverage and how-to guidance in depth.
Sellers should also treat an existing product relationship as leverage and as a risk. It can speed a deal, but sellers should keep the data license separate from software terms so that each can be renewed or ended without affecting the other.

How the deal came together
- OpenAI announced a strategic partnership. On December 4, 2024 OpenAI said it would bring Future's content to ChatGPT users.
- Attribution and links were included. Users get content from across Future's portfolio with attribution and links to full original articles.
- A working relationship already existed. Future had deployed OpenAI-powered chatbots on some sites and used its tools for sales, marketing and editorial.
- Terms stayed private. No price or term was disclosed.
Takeaways for companies with data
- Specialist publishers fill niches a general news license does not cover, such as gaming and hardware.
- Existing product use helped the seller frame the deal as a partnership.
- Future joined ProRata in 2025 too, so it licenses to more than one AI company.
