Folha de S.Paulo licenses its archive and real-time feed to Google's Gemini

Folha gave Google's Gemini access to its full archive and a real-time text feed, with a fixed and variable payment, and joined Google's News Pilot program. The value was not disclosed.

SAO PAULO, May 18, 2026 - Folha de S.Paulo confirmed an agreement with Google to license journalism to the Gemini assistant. The deal, the newspaper's first with an AI platform, gives Gemini access to Folha's full archive and a real-time feed for use in generating answers. The value was not disclosed.1

Terms of the deal

The Brazilian outlet Conversion reported that the contract covers two flows. The real-time news feed is directed at training and citation in Gemini. The historical archive feeds queries that need context about past events in answers generated by Google's AI.1

In return, Folha receives structured compensation in two layers: a fixed, contractual part and a variable part tied to usage. Folha did not disclose specific amounts but confirmed that the model follows standards used in international partnerships between large publishers and AI platforms. Gemini is to show direct credit to Folha, with the publication's name and links to the original reports used.1 Folha also joined Google News' News Pilot program and the Pinpoint research tool for journalists.1

Background

The agreement follows one signed by Estadao in January 2026, according to Conversion.1 Folha had also sued OpenAI in 2025, and on May 25, 2026 it signed a separate content partnership with OpenAI that ended that suit, covered in another entry on this tracker.2

What it means for data sellers

Folha's structure is a useful model. A fixed payment gives the seller income whatever the usage, while a variable part rewards content that the buyer actually uses. Separating a live feed from an archive also lets a seller price two different assets.

Sellers should note the attribution term. Requiring credit and links in outputs protects the seller's brand, and it is a term a buyer will often accept more readily than a higher price.

This entry is a news summary. SellYourAIData was not involved in the deal.

How the deal came together

  1. Folha confirmed the agreement. In May 2026 Folha confirmed its first partnership with an AI platform, following Estadao's January deal.
  2. Two content flows were licensed. A real-time news feed for training and citation, and a historical archive for context in answers.
  3. Pay has a fixed and variable part. Folha receives a fixed contractual part and a part tied to usage.
  4. Credit and links are required. Gemini should show credit to Folha and links to the original reports.

Takeaways for companies with data

  • A seller can license a live feed and an archive as separate flows.
  • Payment mixes a fixed floor with usage-based upside.
  • Folha signed with Google after suing OpenAI, so it uses both litigation and licensing.
