Axios and OpenAI announce three-year partnership funding four local newsrooms
OpenAI will fund four new Axios Local newsrooms over three years and provide technical help, while ChatGPT draws on Axios reporting. The amount was not disclosed.
ARLINGTON, Va., January 15, 2025 - Axios and OpenAI announced a multiyear partnership under which OpenAI will fund the expansion of Axios Local into four additional cities: Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Boulder and Huntsville. OpenAI will also provide technical assistance. The financial amount was not disclosed.1
Terms of the deal
Maginative reported that the three-year agreement has OpenAI funding the newsroom expansions and offering technical help to improve the creation, distribution and monetization of Axios journalism. Axios Local operated in 30 US cities at the time, serving more than two million newsletter subscribers, and the deal would take it to 34. Axios aims to scale its local footprint to 100 cities over time.1
The report described the arrangement as OpenAI's first direct investment in local newsrooms. Axios journalists retain full editorial control, while AI tools are expected to streamline operations such as personalizing newsletters and optimizing content distribution. OpenAI's Varun Shetty said AI can play a transformative role in supporting local journalism.1 Digiday's 2025 timeline adds that ChatGPT answers draw on Axios content, with attribution and links.2
Background
The Axios agreement was one of the first publisher deals of 2025, alongside the Associated Press and AFP agreements announced the same week.2 Axios later became one of the newest publishers in Google's paid News AI pilot, which Google said had grown to more than 400 publications by October 2026.3
What it means for data sellers
The Axios deal shows that the payment in a data deal need not be a lump sum. Funding for a specific project can be the consideration, and it can be worth more to a seller than cash if it directly expands its business.
Sellers should still put numbers on it. A deal that pays in services or funding is hard to compare with a license fee, and it helps to value each part separately so the seller understands what it is giving up.
