Google signs deal with AP to bring real-time news into Gemini

Google's Gemini app will receive a feed of real-time AP information, in Google's first such deal with a news publisher. Neither company disclosed what Google pays.

NEW YORK, January 15, 2025 - Google said its AI chatbot Gemini will deliver up-to-date news from the Associated Press in what it described as its first such deal with a news publisher. Google announced the deal in a blog post, saying AP will deliver a feed of real-time information to enhance the results shown in the Gemini app. Neither company disclosed the price.1

Terms of the deal

The AP's own report said Google declined further comment on how it would present information from AP's journalism and whether it would credit or link back to the organization. AP's chief revenue officer, Kristin Heitmann, said in a written statement that AP is pleased Google recognizes the value of its journalism and its commitment to nonpartisan reporting in the development of generative AI products.1

The deal differs from AP's 2023 agreement with OpenAI, which licensed part of AP's archive. The Google arrangement centres on a real-time feed for use in Gemini.12

Background

AP has sought to diversify its revenue in recent years. In 2023 it signed its OpenAI deal, whose financial terms were also not disclosed, and that agreement was followed by a run of similar partnerships between OpenAI and news organizations.1 News groups including The New York Times have sued AI companies for copyright infringement, even as others, like AP, have chosen to license.1 AP later joined Microsoft's pay-per-use content marketplace in late 2025.3

What it means for data sellers

AP now licenses to at least three AI companies, each for a different kind of product. That is the strongest evidence in this tracker that a seller can offer the same underlying data in different forms, such as an archive, a live feed, or per-use access.

For other sellers, the lesson is to define the delivery format. A real-time feed raises questions about update frequency, accuracy and credit that an archive license does not, and these should be written into the agreement.
