AFP and Mistral AI announce global partnership for Le Chat

Mistral's Le Chat assistant gets access to the full range of AFP text stories, about 2,300 a day in six languages, under a multi-year agreement. Financial terms were not disclosed.

PARIS, January 16, 2025 - Agence France-Presse and Mistral AI announced a global partnership that gives Mistral's conversational assistant, Le Chat, access to the full range of AFP text stories. The multi-year agreement is meant to make Le Chat's answers more accurate and current. Financial terms were not disclosed.1

Terms of the deal

According to AFP's release, Le Chat will draw on AFP's daily production of 2,300 text stories in six languages: French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Arabic. The agreement highlights the work of AFP's 1,700 journalists reporting from around the world.1

Mistral chief executive Arthur Mensch said partnering with a globally trusted news agency lets Le Chat offer reliable, factual and up-to-date responses verified by professional journalists, which matters particularly for businesses adopting the technology. He said it also gives clients a multicultural, multilingual alternative.1 The release said the agreement came out of months of discussions and marks a new phase of development for AFP. It did not state a price.1

Background

Mistral AI is a French AI company that the release described as a rapidly growing European leader in the field. AFP, which had recently marked its 80th anniversary, is one of the world's leading news agencies. The Mistral agreement was announced the same week as Google's deal with the Associated Press and OpenAI's partnership with Axios.2

What it means for data sellers

The AFP deal shows a buyer paying for reliability and language coverage rather than only volume. An AI company that wants to sell to businesses needs sources it can name and trust, and a vetted agency feed meets that need.

Sellers with multilingual or regional data should lead with that coverage. It is hard for a buyer to replicate, and it supports a case for a multi-year commitment instead of a one-time sale.
