23andMe signs $20M one-year data license with GSK
23andMe announced a collaboration extension with GSK that includes a new one-year, non-exclusive data license. 23andMe received $20 million upfront for access to de-identified, summary-level results from analyses of its genetic database.
SUNNYVALE, October 30, 2023 23andMe announced a collaboration extension with GSK that includes a new data licensing agreement. Under an amendment to the existing Collaboration Agreement, 23andMe receives a $20 million upfront payment for a one-year, non-exclusive data license.1
Terms of the deal
The license runs for 12 months. GSK receives access to de-identified, summary-level results from genome-wide and phenome-wide analyses of the 23andMe database, and 23andMe also provides research services for analyses of that data during the same period.1
Any new drug discovery programs that GSK initiates during the agreement will be owned and advanced solely by GSK. 23andMe may be eligible for downstream royalties under certain uses of the database by GSK.1 For three previously initiated programs, 23andMe has taken a royalty option, and both companies keep royalties on several active programs from the original collaboration.1
What it means for data sellers
The deal shows that genetic and health datasets can be licensed in aggregate form for a fixed fee and a short term. The buyer here received summary results and services, not individual-level records. This entry describes a drug-discovery data license, not an AI-training license.

How the deal came together
- An existing collaboration is amended. On October 30, 2023 23andMe announced an amendment to its Collaboration Agreement with GSK that adds a new data licensing agreement.
- GSK pays upfront for a 12-month license. 23andMe receives a $20 million upfront payment for a non-exclusive data license that runs 12 months.
- What GSK receives. GSK gets de-identified, summary-level results from genome-wide and phenome-wide analyses of the 23andMe database, plus research services for analyses over the same period.
- Ownership and royalties. Any new drug discovery programs GSK starts during the agreement belong solely to GSK, and 23andMe may earn downstream royalties on certain uses of the database.
Takeaways for companies with data
- A data owner can license summary-level results without handing over raw records, which limits privacy exposure while still earning a large upfront fee.
- Short, non-exclusive terms let the seller keep selling the same asset to other buyers.
- Royalty rights on downstream programs can be negotiated on top of an upfront data fee.
